Doggie Manners

Heel2Heal does not conform to any particular philosophy in regards to training techniques, but rather evaluates each individual animal as a whole, and puts together a holistic program based on the initial assessment and discussions with the guardian.  At Heel2Heal we like to put the emphasize on Doggie Manners when it comes to training, if you ask a hundred people what their idea of a well trained dog is, you will get a hundred different answers.  However, I think most of us will agree that a well behaved dog is a dog with good manners, just like a well behaved child has  good manners and social skills. 

What are Doggie Manners? You may be asking yourself.  I look at them as the THREE Cs: 

CALM, COMFORTABLE and CONFIDENT, lets break them down and take a look:

CALM                                     Your role is to teach your dog how you would like him to behave and that begins with being calm.  If you are nervous you send that nervous energy straight to your dog and he is now anxious and wondering what is making you so nervous.  Being able to bring yourself to that wonderful calm place will enable you to build a stronger bond with your dog and work with him from that calm, loving place without judgment. 

 Now that your dog is calm he will be able to focus on understanding various commands.

COMFORTABLE              At all times you and your dog should be comfortable both physically and in what you are doing. Have the appropriate collar and leash for your dog's comfort and needs. Most importantly make sure you are both having fun and stop while you are still having fun.  This makes the exercises more fun for your dog and leaves him wanting more.

CONFIDENT                          As you continue with the THREE Cs and the other techniques that we will put together in your personalized Holistic Dog Lifestyle Program your confidence will grow and the relationship between you and your dog will flourish.  BE CONFIDENT; go for a walk with your shoulders back as you proudly show off the wonderful dog by your side.

Creative Play

Dogs love to play!  I know my dogs love to play, so why not make play with you dog more creative.

Each of our dog's have their own genetic make-up, this coupled with environmental factors since birth form your dogs basic personality.  We can look at the general behavior and various breed specific behaviors that your dog may be displaying and find fun ways to incoporate them into play.  An example of turning unwanted behavior into Creative Play would be having a Basenji and him jumping up on the dining room table at any given moment, most often than not without any warning.  Basenjis love to jump, it is part of their genetic make-up, so instead of never allowing him to jump we create outlets through play that allow him to express his natural behaviors.
